Representative Ground Motion Time Histories for
Orange County Transportation Management Center Caltrans District 12

Hushmand Associates, Inc. conducted a comprehensive site-specific probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) to develop site-specific design horizontal and vertical earthquake ground motions for the proposed District 12 (Orange County) Transportation Management Center (TMC) located in the City of Irvine, California.

The probabilistic ground motion analysis was conducted to estimate peak ground accelerations and 5-percent-damped uniform hazard acceleration response spectra for two levels of the design earthquake ground motions at the project site, maximum capable and design basis earthquakes.

Additionally, seven representative natural ground motion time histories for each design earthquake were selected for time-history analysis of a base-isolated structure at the proposed TMC site. The TMC is the nerve center for the urban freeway and highway systems. Real time information is gathered from many sources such as electronic sensors in the pavement, freeway call boxes, video cameras, 911 calls, officers on patrol, Caltrans highway crews, ramp meter sensors, earthquake monitors, motorist cellular calls, and commercial traffic reporters, which is sent to the TMC 24-hours a day, seven days a week.
